Company Profile: Alcordo Advertising

It was in mid-60s when a one-door office along F. Ramos Street opened – the J.
Alcordo and Associates came to be. In 1965, J. Alcordo and Associates was a one-stop shop for one’s advertising and public relations needs.

Cebu in the mid-60s was the prime area for Manila ad agencies since a great number of corporations considered the city as the southern hub. There were regional offices in Cebu for the Visayas- Mindanao operations. Majority of the shipping companies had their main offices here. Manila ad agencies also maintained sub-offices at the time.

Some of the agencies are J. Walt Thompson, Mc Cann Erickson, and Philprom. Other emerging ad agencies were National Ads and Lomocso Advertising. Among these, J. Alcordo was agency to beat.

Yet, there was no stiff competition. Agencies helped each other and lobbied, as a group, in Congress to elevate advertising practice into a respectable profession.

Ad practitioners and clients were casually helping each other out and eventually endedup as friends. There were some corporate executives of the client-company who were trained in Madison Ave. (New York, USA) and they gave lectures in the principles of Advertising, by the book. In no time, the J. Alcordo became the king makers during election season; they mastered house-to-house campaign for products like Tide; fine tuned file advertising like free movies by caravan in the in the towns; billboards became recognized as a major ad tool. They became known as the Visayas- Mindanao specialist.

J. Alcordo had fought like the other advertising professionals, and was able to put Cebu in the map. They were there in the first Ad Congress back in 70’s and in the subsequent Ad Congress there after. Presented out a paper which pointed out that 2/3 of the market was in the south, and persisted that 2/3 of the expenditures should be allocated for the southern market.

Organized and established as a single proprietorship in 1969 under the name of Alcordo Outdoor Advertising. Incorporated under the name of Alcordo International Incorporated in 1992.

SC Approves Political Advertisements on Public Utility Vehicles!

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has amended its memorandum circular after the Supreme Court ruled that political advertisements be allowed in public utility vehicles (PUV)

In LTFRB Memorandum Circular 2015-029, the LTFRB lifted the prohibition of political ads on PUVs such as jeeps, buses, taxis, pedicabs, and tricycles.

This was based on Supreme Court Resolution 206020 that ruled in favour of 1-United Transport Koalisyon (1-UTAK) which filed a petition against the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).

The full and complete text of SC G.R. No. 206020 can be found in this link.

OAAP Members Can Benefit From Media Landscape Updates For Their Strategic Planning

OAAP members are off to a quick start this week the return to work last January 4, 2016.  As 2015 whizzed by, some of the strategic planning duties were postponed to this January.

The annual planning process plays an essential role. In addition to formulating at least some elements of a company’s strategy for the next 12 to 18 months, the process results in a budget, which establishes the resource allocation map; sets financial, operating, and marketing targets, and aligns the management team on its strategic priorities. The operative question now is as companies go for the preparation of the strategic planning event, how can they plan properly for the brands they are pushing and the markets they are trying to conquer if they don't begin with understanding the media habits of their target audience and consumers?

This is where the input of three people come in.  Gabs Buluran, Jay Bautista, and yours truly, Lloyd Tronco.

Here are our profiles in the event you need any help:

1) Gabriel V. Buluran

General Manager
Kantar Media Philippines

Gabriel has close to 25 years experience in Media and Market Research, designing studies, managing data collection, and panel homes and data production.

He is currently managing the Client Servicing Team and National TV Audience Measurement (TV Ratings) Service in Mega Manila, Urban and Rural Philippines, where he is responsible for the overall management and direction of Kantar. He launched Kantar Media Philippines’ Radio Audience Measurement Service for KBP and the Radio Research Council in 2013 and developed the first Internet Audience Measurement Service for the Philippines 2014.

Before joining Kantar Media Philippines, Gabriel worked with ACNielsen Philippines. He joined the company as Associate Director of Nielsen Media Research, then went on to become the Director for Customized Research Operations.

Gabriel earned his degree in Bachelor of Arts major in Philosophy from Ateneo de Manila University.

2) Lloyd Tronco

Executive Director, Philippine Center
for Out-of-Home Media Research and Science (PhilCourse)

Lloyd Tronco is a stalwart in outdoor advertising in the Philippines. His first brush with outdoor advertising and Out-Of-Home media, started 30 years ago having grown up in a family business which provided billboard space in the Visayas and Mindanao. Having worked his way up in the family business, he became the General Manager of Tronco Advertising which is based in Bacolod by 1994.

In 2001, when Out-Of-Home media began gaining popularity in the Philippines due to the advent of digital tarpaulin printing, Lloyd Tronco was hired by McCann Erickson Philippines’ media unit, UniversalMcCann to be part of a team specializing in out-of-home media. At UniversalMcCann, he handled the Out-Of-Home media requirements of the agency including that of Coca-Cola, Cathay Pacific, Mastercard, and Globe Telecom, until early 2005.

Following the stint with UniversalMcCann, he set up a consultancy which developed the business of OOH media vendors and at the same time serving the Out-Of-Home media needs of various media agencies.

3) Jay Bautista

General Manager
Strategic Consumer and Media Incites

Jay is currently the General Manager of Strategic and Consumer Incites, Inc. (SCMI) which is a market and media research Start-up Company.

Prior to setting up his own company, he was Managing Director for Media at The Nielsen Company where he spent 19 years honing his skills in media research particularly in the field of advertising information and audience measurement covering traditional media (TV, Print, Radio, Cinema, Out of Home) and digital media (online and mobile).

He is currently a director of the Marketing and Opinion Research Society of the Philippines (MORES) where he was past President (2010) and co-chair of the Digital Measurement Board (DMB) of the Internet and Mobile Marketing Association of the Philippines (IMMAP) to which he served as director in 2013.

Jay earned his degree in AB Communication Arts from the Ateneo de Manila University and a Master’s in Business Administration degree from the University of the Philippines.

Outdoor Advertising as defined in Entrepreneur magazine

Outdoor Advertising as defined in Entrepreneur magazine.

Definition:
Any advertising done outdoors that publicizes your business's products and services. Types of outdoor advertising include billboards, bus benches, interiors and exteriors of buses, taxis and business vehicles, and signage posted on the exterior of your own brick-and-mortar location.

Outdoor advertising works well for promoting your product in specific geographic areas. While billboards, bus benches, and transit advertising can be very effective for the small-business owner, any successful outdoor campaign begins with your own location's signage.

Your outdoor sign is often the first thing a potential customer sees. Your sign should be sufficiently bright and conspicuous to attract attention (without being garish) and sufficiently informative to let prospective customers know what's sold there.

Ride around town and observe which signs catch your eye. Note which ones don't. Then think of the impression each sign gives you. Remember that you never get a second chance to make a first impression, so give this important marketing tool your best efforts.

If you're involved in a business that has a fleet of vehicles conducting deliveries or providing a service, your company's name, logo, and phone number should be clearly visible on the vehicles. It's free advertising that allows you to increase your exposure in your market.

Billboards are most effective when located close to the business advertised. Because of their high cost, they're usually used to reach a very large audience, as in political campaigns. They're likely to be too expensive for most small firms, and some communities have strict ordinances governing the placement of billboards. In Vermont, for example, they're prohibited.

Bus-bench advertising is an excellent medium because it's highly visible, like a billboard. Essentially, bus-bench advertisers have a huge audience, held captive at red lights or in slow-moving traffic. An account executive of a Los Angeles-based bus bench manufacturing company said that an advertisement on one bus bench at a busy Los Angeles intersection would be seen by 35,000 to 50,000 people per day.

Usually, the advertising consists of simple two-color artwork with your company's name, brief copy describing the product or service, address and phone number. Rates and terms vary depending on the city you're in.

Call your city's mass transit department or local bus company to find out who rents advertising space on their bus-stop benches. Some outdoor advertising companies also handle this type of advertising.
Transit advertising on buses and taxicabs reaches lots of people, especially commuters. Your ad is highly visible, and market research on transit advertising shows that it's very effective.
